Frequently asked questions
Every common question about the time card calculator, overtime rules and pay tools, grouped by topic. Short answers here; the linked pages go deeper.
Using the time card calculator
How do I calculate hours with a lunch break?
Enter your clock-in and clock-out around lunch as one punch pair, then put the unpaid lunch length, such as 30, in the break column. If you clock out and back in for lunch, enter it as two punch pairs instead and leave the break at zero.
How does the calculator handle overnight shifts?
An out time earlier than its in time crosses midnight and counts toward the day the shift started — a 10:00 pm to 6:00 am shift counts 8 hours on the day it began.
Can I use it for two weeks, half a month or a month?
Yes. Pick Bi-weekly, Semi-monthly or Monthly and every day of the period gets its own row with its date. Overtime is still computed per workweek on its own 40-hour threshold, never averaged across the period.
How do I calculate gross pay from my time card?
Regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × 1.5 (+ double-time × 2 under daily rules). The full method and a worked 46-hour example are in the gross pay guide.
Can I download my timesheet?
Download CSV or Excel gives a spreadsheet of every punch, break, hour total and pay figure — no sign-up required. Print, copy summary and email work the same way.
Does it save my punches?
Punches save only in this browser. Nothing is uploaded unless you press "Save to cloud / get share link", which stores the current period under a private link that expires 90 days after the last save.
Is the total what my paycheck will show?
It is an estimate. Employers may round punches or apply premiums this calculator does not model. Treat the result as a check on your own math.
Overtime rules
What is federal overtime?
Under the FLSA, hours over 40 in a single workweek are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. There is no daily overtime in federal law.
How does California overtime work?
Over 8 and up to 12 hours in a day is 1.5x, over 12 hours is 2x, and the seventh consecutive worked day earns premiums. Daily OT is never double-counted in the weekly total.
What is the 7-minute rounding rule?
Employers may round punches to the nearest interval (e.g., 15 minutes) as long as the practice is neutral. See the rounding rules page for the full breakdown.
Pay tools
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide annual salary by scheduled hours per year (hours per week × weeks per year). The salary to hourly tool shows the full math with PTO and overtime adjustments.
How does a contractor rate differ from an employee hourly rate?
A contractor rate adds benefits/load and business costs, then divides by billable hours only — usually well above the employee-equivalent base rate; the tool shows how much for your assumptions.
What is my effective hourly rate after PTO?
Salary divided by productive hours after paid holidays and PTO. See the salary after PTO tool for the calculation.
How many paychecks is bi-weekly vs semi-monthly?
Bi-weekly gives 26 paychecks a year on a fixed weekday; semi-monthly gives 24 on fixed dates. Annual pay is identical.
